History of Church on the Rock
In January of 2000 the Lord inspired David and LaRae Pepper to start a church in the valley area to reach the un-churched. Through prayer and adjoining of faith with David and Rebecca Dargis we held our first meeting February 22, 2000 in the home of the Dargis'. With seven families of similar heart and vision we began to call on the Lord for his purpose to be established in our midst.
On May 14th we had our first Sunday morning service and celebrated Mother's Day. Couples took turns teaching the children and nursery workers were few. We used white grape juice for communion service so we wouldn't stain the carpet if little hands had a spill. By October we had outgrown the Dargis' living room and we were able to lease one of the units in the Pioneer Plaza. At the end of the month eight people from the church went on a mission's trip to Iquitos, Peru to help build an addition to a bible school and minister in churches in the evening. The New Year came and with it more people were attending the church. We were blessed to obtain the building unit next to our first one and have a place for children's church and a bigger nursery.
In May of 2001 the need to expand the sanctuary was evident and so we knocked out a wall and made a sanctuary that could seat 200 people. Over the first year of the church many people that came, financially sacrificed and donated many things to the church so we could get off and running. Pastor David Pepper continued to support his family by commercial fishing in the summer months. The church continued to grow and soon we had to go to two services and begin the planning and fund raising for a larger facility.
In 2003 we purchased a section of land and began our building project. Many hours of hard labor and many, many volunteers from the church and local community assisted to see this project to completion.
On Easter Sunday 2005 we held our first service in our new building. A special service three weeks later was held to honor all the volunteers and contractors that worked so hard to make this happen. Of course all the glory goes to God but His faithful servants contributed mightily to this. We are now holding two services as we have outgrown our new sanctuary. Planning for Phase II is underway.
